A Weston kitchen rarely holds only one built-in
The usual Weston call is not about an appliance, it is about one of several — a column pair in the main run, drawers in the island, a wine cabinet in the pantry, and every one of them fitted during the same build by the same crew.

Several sealed systems, one installation date
When a kitchen is specified in one go, its refrigeration ages in one go. Components with a service life measured in hours reach the end of it at roughly the same time, which is why a house that has never had a call can suddenly have two in a season. It is also why the second unit is always worth ten minutes on a visit booked for the first.
The wine cabinet is the one that hides its condition longest. Wine storage is judged on stability rather than cold, and a zone sitting several degrees above its set point does not announce itself the way a warm refrigerator does. Measured at the top and the bottom of the cabinet, a drifting zone is obvious; read off the display, it is invisible.

Panels, pantries and remote plant
Large custom kitchens hide the mechanical side thoroughly. Grilles are behind decorative toe boards, service access is through a pantry, and on some installations the condensing side has been placed away from the cabinet altogether. None of that changes the diagnosis, but it changes how long it takes to reach the readings, and it is the reason a first visit here is booked with room in it.
The other Weston constant is the panel. A cabinet-fronted column is scribed to the millwork around it, so the door furniture, the hinge cartridges and the closing force are part of the appliance rather than decoration. A heavy panel on a tired hinge is one of the most common causes of a compartment that will not hold temperature at the top.
Long driveways and gated entries are worth mentioning when you book, purely so the van arrives at the right door with the right kit.

When repair is the wrong answer
A like-for-like replacement of a built-in of this class runs $8,660 to $19,630 for the appliance alone, before delivery, panels, cabinetry or the fitting. Against that, a control board, a fan motor or a defrost circuit is a straightforward decision.
It stops being straightforward when the sealed system has failed on a cabinet that is already old, or when a platform has been out of production long enough that a specific part is no longer made. In those cases you will be told so plainly, with the reasoning, and the diagnosis is yours to take to whoever you like.

It filled with water and then never harvested. The module thermostat had failed and the inlet screen was partly blocked. Both dealt with in one visit, and he checked the shut off valve under the sink while he was here.

The column stands against an interior wall so it breathes entirely through the base grille, which was solid with dust. He cleaned it out, fitted a fan and told me to vacuum it twice a year. Much quieter now.

After the kitchen was extended across the rear the unit ended up in a much warmer corner and struggled all summer. He confirmed the sealed system was healthy before touching anything, opened up the airflow at the base and fitted a new fan. It copes now.
